Housing and Care Quarter, Salzburg
Salzburg, in Austria, seeks proposals for a new residential quarter where housing, childcare, elderly care and landscape must operate as one interconnected civic environment rather than isolated programmes.
The competition seeks architectural and landscape concepts for two development zones within the Glan Gärten masterplan in Salzburg, Austria, combining subsidised housing, market housing, a childcare facility and a senior living complex within a new residential quarter. The brief divides the site into eastern and western development fields, each requiring integrated architectural and landscape proposals delivered by interdisciplinary teams of two architectural practices and one landscape architecture practice. The project tests how high-density residential development can negotiate care infrastructure, shared green space and mobility within a coherent urban landscape. Proposals must address the relationship between subsidised and privately financed housing, public movement corridors, ecological open space and community facilities while maintaining strong pedestrian and cycling connectivity. The eastern development zone includes a senior living programme of 96 resident rooms organised into clustered care units with communal and therapy spaces, while the western zone incorporates a four-group childcare facility requiring integrated indoor and outdoor learning environments. The brief places particular emphasis on the interface between buildings, public realm and landscape structure, including buffer zones, neighbourhood open space and the central quarter spine.
