Material Cultures is a not-for-profit design and research organisation based in Hackney - a start-up that is a high flyer in Beedier`s Social Zeitgeist chart. The Breaking Waves Pavilion featured in last summer`s London Festival of Architecture - "a seven-day workshop, facilitated alongside Mark Harrington (Master Thatcher) and Mollie McMillen (Natural Weaver), students and residents of Barking explored the experimental use of reed in construction. The workshop was held in collaboration with Yasmeen Lari, with a focus on working within and drawing materials from wetlands and flood prone areas."

Walworth based Cottrell & Vermeulen, are known for the quality of their education, schools and community projects, and this is lovely piece of co-design for a school landscape proposal - working with the students of the school on pattern making ideas.

A great new extension project in Forest Gate by LSD Architects, which was completed last year. "Retained joists and unexpected finishes, such as terrazzo tiles on the façade and patio, add delightful moments throughout the space. Prioritising reuse, energy efficiency, and low-carbon materials, the design creates a home built for longevity and well-being."

"Excited to share another photo of our recently completed project in Waltham Forest.
We`ve been working closely with our clients to bring their vision to life. The bespoke bench is a natural extension of the dining area or an inside-outside reading nook.
The pink steelwork reflects the playfulness of the brief, while the cork floor with underfloor heating offers a cosy feeling throughout the year.

"Elevation treatment responding to a series of client references showing their love of timber panelling. It accentuates key features of a traditional timber elements; the sash window, the porch and the plinth, working with a slipped form to create a contemporary addition to an East London terrace.
We were very happy to welcome @b3yzagorur to the studio for two weeks work experience this summer after her first year @uniofbatharch, who assisted project lead Dominic (@arch___ive) with the development of the model and initial designs."

Another great house from Ström Architects approaches completion, ruggedly set in rural Snowdonia, and overlooking the Irish Sea - presented here as site photograph and render. "Two slate-clad volumes at ground floor level act as a barrier against the prevailing winds and rain, providing shelter and privacy to the entrance courtyard on the inland side of the site...The heavy slate grounds the building on the site, whilst the corten steel offers a striking visual contrast."

Rarely do plots like these come up, the #views here are unobstructed, #southfacing and simply beautiful! Being deep in the Greenbelt our current site is made up of various outbuildings which we propose to remove and replace with this #stunninghome so the overall impact on the Greenbelt is a positive one (Greenbelt development done right!).

Clad with a Limestone panelling, the #materiality is a throwback to the original use of the site to ensure the historic value of the site is remembered and to some degree restored. It`s complimented with various #sustainable technologies including #solarpanels, sedum roofs, airsource heat pumps and crossventilation throughout the house. Internally, timbersoffits line the ceilings alongside exposed #timberstructures to create a truly unique and family friendly forever home."

This new extension to an historic building in Johnshaven by Aberdeenshire based Annie Kenyon Architects is on the way to completion. We like the simple juxtoposition in the related form of the extension against the cottage - and the generous amount of sky in the photo.

"A few months back we designed a scheme for the transformation of a derelict warehouse into a live/work unit. It has been stuck in planning for months, with an officer that doesn’t understand the location and its nuances, but refuses to visit the site and have a conversation. Providing new thoughtful and well designed living spaces in London seems to be a priority in paper, but the decision making authorities often lack skilled and cooperative people to work with studios towards the same goal!"

We have always thought that the duplex apartments at Hatfield and Basterfield House at Golden Lane, by Chamberlin Powell and Bon, are among the best designed small flats in London. Shoreditch based studio Archmongers have had the enviable task of fully refurbishing one for a lucky client - and the results are beautiful.

The long established firm of RMJM are high flyers in Beedier`s Social Media Zeitgeist listings. Now, with offices in every continent, they are a British firm consistently designing high quality largescale projects across the world. This new addition to the portfolio, revealed last week, is formed of two stacked 30 storey office towers on a mixed-used podium in Saudi Arabia.

Historic library buildings are really some of our most valuable urban structures, and they have been having a rough time of it over the past fifteen years. So it is especially great to see a project such as this in South East London by Hawkins Brown, who are so good at bringing historic buildings to life in contemporary ways.

"The novelist Jorge Luis Borges once said, "I have always imagined paradise as a kind of library."
We might not claim to have built paradise at the Plumstead Centre, which features in a new article from @archdaily, but we certainly tried! This project restored Plumstead`s turn-of-the-century library and introduced a cafe, dance studio, and other flexible leisure facilities to encourage the community to return and reclaim the building.

A characterful new renovation of an historic house in Hitchin - with some striking features designed by local architect Michael Collins. We love a post that intersperses some working drawings to help us understand the project.

"Sneak peek of Elmside, the recently completed deep retrofit and extension of a historic lodge in Hitchin. This building had been badly neglected and its redevelopment was a long labour of love alongside our wonderful clients and @ardentconstructionltd.
The building was home to James Hack Tuke founder to Girton College and an early feminist advocate. The historic building was insulated beyond 2026 new build standards, with specialist low energy leaded glazing, with an energy centre and solar array powering its air source heating system.
A new wraparound extension creates a dramatic stair tower, and new kitchen area. The use of timber framing, copper, wildflower roof and decorated brickwork speaks to the original ornate terracotta detailed facade and restored lacework pargetting.

Knowing it very well, Lewisham High Street is an urban environment that could benefit from architectural intervention, and this new market structure by Studio Weave is an exciting prospect. It’s a new focal point for an ancient market — a market house with adjoining canopies, which will provide shelter for one of London’s longest standing seven-day markets and the wider community. This project sets out to revitalise the Market as a backdrop for daily life, improving the everyday; whether it be meeting friends, loved ones or even just buying potatoes!
The vision for Lewisham Market is to strengthen and revitalise the heart of Lewisham. The notable market attracts and connects the community and provides a point of local pride. Together with the landscape proposals, it aims to create a more vibrant, green, and accessible public space that embodies the character of Lewisham and its diverse cultural identity"

Wandsworth based Sketch Architects have utilised the diverse awards programme to great effect here, with a nomination for a beautiful new eco home on a sensitive urban site in Lymington, at the edge of the New Forest. The Build It Awards are focussed on small residential homes and renovations, with a wide range of award categories. The house was designed and built using SIPS (Structural Insulated Panels), a prefabricated modern method of construction which offers very high thermal performance and excellent airtightness.

A circular economy call to arms from Dalston based Office S&M. The Tate Institute in Silvertown has been abandoned since 2007, and this consented planning proposal for the retrofit of the building for a mixed-use community space, will bring it back to life. Office S&M are seeking reusable construction materials for the development of the project, in liaison with the re-use team at re:new, a wonderful resource for promoting the circular economy.

The Tate Institute deep retrofit has been approved under delegated powers with no conditions thanks to your letters of support, and now we need your help to source unwanted construction materials for the build!
We’re already on site with the circular economy and natural material-led retrofit work on this locally listed building, so we’re on the hunt for large and small quantities of very common surplus or second-hand materials including:
- Insulation (PIR for the floor, any thickness of rigid or flexible woodwool for the walls and roof, and any thickness of rigid mineral wool)
- Structural timber and/or roofing battens
- Sand
- Rolls of DPM
- Internal doorsets
- Rolls of linoleum
- and much more...

Henry J Lyons are one of four Irish architecture practices that appear in the Beedier Social Media Zeitgeist Top 100 listings. It is a large studio, employing over 250 people, but there is still room for smaller bespoke projects such as this timber clubhouse in the grounds of the Montenotte Hotel - bringing the guests closer to the woodlands.

"Henry J Lyons’ design for the redevelopment of the grounds of the Montenotte Hotel provides nine lightweight suites and a clubhouse within a rejuvenated woodland. Our design concept centred on integrating modern elegance with the existing woodland environment. The suites, inspired by cantilevered and nest-like structures, were designed to preserve the natural topography while offering expansive panoramic views. Surprise elements are crafted throughout the journey to the units, and expansive picture windows greet guests with breath-taking views."

Nooma is a diverse studio of young designers from London. As part of Nooma’s ongoing research of intergenerational design, our project, The Big Playground is a communal sandbox crafted to bring people of all ages and abilities together, underlining the importance of play and community for overall well-being. The project represents our tailored solution to address the distinct requirements of Enfield residents. The Enfieldians’ personas were shaped through on-site interviews and our firsthand encounters with individuals from our own experiences living in London.
We also tackle the issue of outdated housing standards, which are created for nuclear families and lack consideration for three-dimensional living. It’s only when we shift our perspective to consider housing in three dimensions that we can begin to develop culturally tailored residences that cater to the specific needs of inhabitants and promote their well-being"

A beautifully crafted lower-ground entrance space in an historic building by Bermondsey studio pensaer, led by founder Rhys Owen since 2020. "Pensaer means `lead craftsperson’. Our story begins with a love for artisanship and the process of making, and culminates in handcrafted architecture done well. By practising an ethos of gentle design we deliver architecture which aims to elevate and stimulate the senses."

"Our elegant workspace project in Westminster completed earlier this year. One particularly substantial change would be key to unlocking the whole experience of Belgravia House. It took meticulous planning, a rethinking of the fire-escape routes, and some well-coordinated heavy lifting once we were on site, but removing a substantial slab of concrete to create a double-height atrium has been – to put it mildly – transformational. Now the building positively welcomes visitors, with a visible (and much more assertive) entrance leading into a bright and comfortable reception. And with the ground floor and basement now one single space, natural light has forever banished the darkness that was here before."

Nebbia Works, an Islington based studio formed by Brando Posocco and Madhav Kidao in 2018, designed this eye-catching installation for this summer`s Coachella festival in California. Babylon consists of 64 steel-framed components clad in plywood and sprayed with plant-based cellulose insulation.

The stacked assembly of blocks creates a cathedral-like interior void, projection mapped to create a kaleidoscopic cinematic environment. The visual storytelling of the film has been specifically curated to utilise the unique 360, multi faceted projection surface.
The installation is an exploration of monumentality, exuberance and absurdity. Its form builds upon Nebbia’s interest in contradictory structures, which appear to be concurrently primitive and otherworldly; solid and fragile. The installation explores how architecture in its most ancient forms has been universally used to understand and transcend the natural world to attempt to reach the skies both physically and metaphysically."
