Outdoor Exercise Routes Design, Westland
Design, delivery and implementation of public exercise routes across multiple Westland towns, in Netherlands, to promote health, accessibility and active community use.
Commissioned by the Municipality of Westland in the Netherlands, this project extends a successful pilot initiative to deliver a network of public exercise routes across seven additional town centres, creating a total of nine routes throughout the municipality. Conceived as a landscape-led public realm intervention, the scheme comprises the design, supply, installation and first-year maintenance of three looped routes in each location (approximately 3 km, 5 km and 10 km in length) serving a wide range of users from casual walkers to experienced runners. The routes are strategically aligned with key civic amenities such as schools, healthcare facilities and sports infrastructure, supporting broader objectives of public health, accessibility, safety and social cohesion. Delivered under a single-supplier framework agreement, the project emphasises integrated design quality, sustainability, clear wayfinding and long-term usability, embedding social value and environmental responsibility within the development of everyday urban landscapes.
