Wonderlab, Science and Industry Museum
The Science Museum Group intends to appoint a single supplier to provide Architect and Lead Designer services for Wonderlab and Power Up Project at the Science and Industry Museum, Manchester.
The Science Museum Group’s Wonderlab galleries are each an awe-inspiring
spectacle, filled with interactive exhibits and immersive experiences aimed to
engage children and their accompanying adults. Visitors to Wonderlab encounter powerful and meaningful learning experiences - they develop new skills, are challenged in their perceptions and grow in confidence to talk about science and their relationship to it. After visiting our Wonderlab galleries, we want visitors to perceive the world around them differently and leave confident to explore the world around them through creative problem solving and experimenting.
This is an exciting time for the Science and Industry Museum (SIM) to embark on the development of Wonderlab, following the success of Wonderlab at the Science Museum (ScM) in London, the National Science and Media Museum (NSMM) in Bradford, and the National Railway Museum (NRM) in York.
The Architect and Lead Designer for Wonderlab will design the gallery space,
creating the concept for the gallery and work creatively with the Museum-and
direct interactive designers, overseeing their designs to ensure they tie in both
functionally and aesthetically to the overall design.
The Science and Industry Museum occupies a site of great historical importance. Both Planning Approval and Listed Building Consent are required for the substantive internal building changes. Consultation with Manchester City Council for Planning Approval and Listed Building consent will be led by the Wonderlab Architect and Lead Designer, with the Client team providing contributions as required. The Client Team will appoint a Heritage Consultant, and the Wonderlab Architect and Lead Designer will be expected to collaborate with them on the project as required.
