New Civic Centre, Leutenbach
This project proposes a new civic centre on a site currently occupied by a sports pitch in Leutenbach, Germany.
In the small town of Nellmersbach, within the municipality of Leutenbach, a modest sports ground is set to become the focus of a far more ambitious civic transformation. The proposed “Neue Mitte” reimagines this underused site as a new centre of community life, anchored by a Bürgerhaus and framed by a carefully composed sequence of public spaces. The brief calls for a mix of programmes, housing, a medical practice, day-care provision and a local library. Composing a cohesive urban ensemble that reflects both contemporary needs and the scale of the surrounding neighbourhood. The ambition is to create a recognisable civic heart for Nellmersbach: a space that is open, accessible and adaptable, capable of hosting everyday activities as well as communal events. Sustainability, climatic resilience and long-term economic viability underpin the approach, ensuring that the new centre is not only visually compelling but also robust in operation. Procured through a two-stage process combining a design competition with a subsequent negotiated appointment, the project positions design quality at the forefront. The selected team will carry the scheme forward from concept through to detailed delivery, translating the competition’s ideas into a realised piece of civic infrastructure.
