National Archives 1926 Census Exhibition, Dublin
Exhibition design services in support of the public launch of Ireland’s 1926 Census records, which will be released next year
The 1926 Census Exhibition is a landmark cultural initiative led by the National Archives of Ireland, designed to commemorate and contextualise the historic release of Ireland’s 1926 Census records. Scheduled for public access in April 2026—exactly one hundred years after its original collection—this census offers an unprecedented window into Irish life during a formative moment in the young Free State’s history.
To mark this occasion, the National Archives will mount a major tri-city exhibition in Dublin, London, and Boston, inviting audiences to explore the rich social, cultural, and political narratives embedded in the census data. Through immersive design, multimedia storytelling, and original archival materials, the exhibition will present thematic explorations of topics such as language, employment, domestic life, religion, and migration, while highlighting individual life stories captured in the census returns. More than a display of statistics, the project aspires to animate Ireland's collective memory—offering a deeply human portrait of a nation forging its identity in the aftermath of revolution and the beginning of statehood. The exhibition will serve as a lasting resource for public history, accessible both physically and digitally, and will resonate with audiences across generations and geographies.
