Masterplan for Hospital Complex, Güssing
Competition for the redevelopment of a regional hospital complex, calling for renovation, new buildings and extension by the city of Güssing, Austria.
The competition for the redevelopment of Klinik Güssing, a regional hospital in Burgenland, Austria, calls for a comprehensive masterplan that reimagines healthcare delivery within an active campus. Rather than a standalone building, the brief proposes a phased transformation combining new construction with the adaptation, replacement and selective demolition of existing structures. The first phase centres on a new clinical core, Building H, accommodating operating theatres, recovery areas, interventional rooms, a 24-bed ward, and associated diagnostic, logistics and support functions, including a rooftop helipad with direct clinical connections.
Beyond this initial intervention, the masterplan must establish a long-term spatial and operational strategy, reorganising retained buildings while replacing obsolete ones, and ensuring uninterrupted hospital operation throughout construction. The proposal is guided by strict spatial requirements, technical constraints and complex circulation demands, alongside sustainability and energy performance goals. Ultimately, the project calls for a flexible and robust framework capable of balancing immediate clinical needs with the hospital’s future evolution.
