Eugénio dos Santos Secondary School Extension, Lisbon
An international public tender for the architectural design of the requalification and extension of a historic lower secondary school in Lisbon, Portugal.
The project involves the requalification and extension of the Eugénio dos Santos Lower Secondary School, a landmark mid-20th-century educational complex located in the Alvalade neighbourhood of Lisbon. Originally completed in 1951 as part of Portugal’s national technical education reform, the school is recognised for its architectural and cultural value within the modern urban fabric of Alvalade. The intervention forms part of Lisbon Municipality’s School of the Future programme and seeks to modernise the campus while preserving its original spatial structure, volumetry, and heritage elements, ensuring continuity between historic identity and contemporary educational needs.
The brief calls for the refurbishment and seismic upgrading of the existing teaching, gymnasium, and workshop buildings, alongside improved accessibility, energy performance, and environmental sustainability. In parallel, a new sports pavilion is to be constructed within the northern area of the site, enabling the reorganisation of outdoor sports and recreational spaces while maintaining school operations throughout the works. The project also includes the redesign of landscaped areas and playgrounds to support inclusive, flexible, and outdoor learning environments. Delivered through an open international public tender for architectural and engineering design services, the project prioritises multidisciplinary coordination, BIM-based workflows, and long-term adaptability within a dense residential context served by public transport and community infrastructure.
