Civic Centre Refurbishment, Saarlouis
Refurbishment and transformation of an existing cultural hall into a multifunctional, accessible and sustainable community venue in Saarlouis, Germany.
Set in the Saarland town of Saarlouis, the proposed transformation of the Kulturhalle Roden building entails the refurbishment and reprogramming of an ageing civic building into a contemporary, multifunctional cultural hub, one that can accommodate performances, community activities, and informal social life under a single roof. Rather than expanding or replacing the existing structure, the brief insists on working within its current footprint, embracing the constraints of a 1970s building while upgrading it to meet present-day expectations. The ambition is to create a flexible ensemble of spaces: a revitalised event hall, rooms for clubs and associations, areas for youth and cultural initiatives, and a modest bistro that acts as a social anchor. This transformation is to be achieved alongside a comprehensive technical overhaul, addressing accessibility, fire safety, and building services, all of which are currently outdated.
