City Museum Upgrade, Bergen
An open public tender for multidisciplinary design services to upgrade and adapt historic public buildings at Gamle Bergen Museum, in Norway.
Metamorfose Gamle Bergen – Phase 1: Public Buildings is a publicly procured design commission for the sensitive upgrade and adaptation of historic buildings within the Gamle Bergen Museum, an open-air museum in Bergen, Norway. Commissioned by the Bymuseet i Bergen Foundation, the project focuses on the refurbishment of Torvsalen, a relocated late-19th-century former prayer house now used as an event venue, and Pakterboligen, a listed early-19th-century building accommodating retail, ticketing and café functions. The brief prioritises improved accessibility, enhanced public facilities, energy-efficiency measures, improved indoor climate and general interior refurbishment, while carefully responding to the constraints of protected and listed heritage structures. The scope includes architectural and multidisciplinary technical design services, with potential minor extensions related to access or servicing, and forms part of a wider long-term transformation strategy for the museum site, with individual interventions to be confirmed in line with available funding for Phase 1.
