Bute Park Art Gallery, Cardiff
Design Circle invites proposals for a temporary art gallery in Cardiff’s Bute Park, in the UK, through a free, open architectural design competition. Deadline 20 Oct 2026
The competition invites proposals for a contemporary, temporary art gallery on the historic gallery foundations in Bute Park, adjacent to Cardiff’s Animal Wall. Originally commissioned by the Marquess of Bute to house his art collection, the earlier gallery was never completed owing to the outbreak of the Second World War. The proposed pavilion should accommodate art exhibitions, events and a potential touring Welsh architecture exhibition following the Venice Architecture Biennale. Competitors should consider exhibition space, reception and orientation, storage and servicing, accessible facilities and flexible event space, assessing opportunities to share nearby amenities. Proposals must respond sensitively to the Grade I registered landscape, protect existing trees and their roots, and provide step-free access from the main park paths despite the stepped foundations. Local, sustainable and low-carbon materials are encouraged, alongside adaptable construction that allows disassembly, relocation or reuse.
