Art Installation Design for Pavilions in Xi’an Culture & Trade Hub
An open, two-stage international design competition inviting Central Asian artists to create contemporary art installations representing their countries in the Xi’an Culture & Trade Hub, China 25 April 2025
The Xi’an Culture & Trade Hub, part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, is a landmark development in Xi’an designed to foster cultural, diplomatic, and trade relations between China and the five Central Asian nations. At its heart, the hub features five dedicated national pavilions representing Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. This open, two-stage competition seeks professional and emerging artists and designers from these countries to conceive and deliver five unique, contemporary art installations—one for each pavilion. These works should encapsulate the heritage, nature, craftsmanship, and future vision of each nation, serving as lasting cultural symbols for international audiences. In the first stage, artists are invited to submit a concept proposal; 15 shortlisted participants (three per country) will be selected to develop their ideas further in Stage 2, including detailed designs and a video presentation. The final five winning designs will be commissioned and installed in the Hub. This initiative not only highlights Central Asia’s rich cultural tapestry but also encourages artistic innovation and cross-border creative collaboration.
