Zoo Frankfurt – Serengeti Masterplan
A two-stage design competition invites proposals for the Serengeti section of Zoo Frankfurt, in Germany, as part of the ZOOKUNFT 2030+ masterplan.
The project is part of the comprehensive redevelopment strategy ZOOKUNFT 2030+, which aims to restructure 50% of Zoo Frankfurt’s area to ensure future resilience and species-appropriate habitats. As the first of three major construction phases, the Serengeti Zone will present a new savannah-themed visitor experience with interconnected indoor and outdoor animal habitats. The design includes large-scale landscaped enclosures, a state-of-the-art Serengeti Hall, associated smaller buildings (e.g., rhino and meerkat enclosures), and a new public restaurant with an event space. The buildings will blend seamlessly into a landscaped savannah, accommodating animal welfare, sustainability, and educational goals. Innovative elements include a walk-through underwater tunnel in the hippo enclosure and integration of sustainable energy systems.
