University of Music and Performing Arts, Munich
Architectural design competition for campus redevelopment including heritage refurbishment, new building and landscape integration at Munich’s music and theatre university, in Germany.
The Campus Development of the University of Music and Theatre Munich is an architectural design competition for the transformation of a key cultural and academic site in central Munich, located at Arcisstraße 12 within the Kunstareal. The project encompasses the refurbishment of a listed historic building, the design of a new academic building, and the development of surrounding public realm and landscape spaces to form a cohesive campus. The brief calls for a sensitive integration of new and existing structures, enhancing the institution’s urban presence while addressing complex requirements related to cultural use, including specialist acoustic environments for music and theatre, as well as security constraints arising from adjacent uses. Particular emphasis is placed on heritage conservation, memorial considerations linked to the site’s historical context, and the creation of high-quality external spaces that improve connectivity and public engagement.
The competition is organised as a restricted design competition under RPW 2013, structured in three stages: an initial qualification phase followed by two design competition phases. The qualification phase (selection stage) assesses teams based on experience and capability, leading to the invitation of approximately 15–20 teams to participate in the first design phase. This is followed by a second, more detailed design phase involving a shortlisted group of around 10 teams. The competition ultimately leads to the appointment of the winning team for further architectural and landscape design services, with a strong focus on delivering a coherent campus vision that balances architectural quality, functional performance, and long-term urban integration.
