Under the Bridge Public Realm
Belfast City Council is seeking an integrated consultant team for public realm works to improve connectivity between Sailortown, City Quays and Belfast City Centre.
As framed by the ‘Under the Bridges – enhancing the connectivity between Sailortown, City Quays and Belfast City Centre’ report prepared by Belfast City Council (BCC), the ambition of this project will be to prepare highway and environmental improvements across the study area in line with the strategic direction set out in the Belfast Agenda, a Bolder Vision and the Waterfront Taskforce.
The scheme and the improvements made will seek to:
- Restitch communities back into the fabric of the city through the provision of quality leisure spaces designed to support sustainable city centre communities.
- Reconnect the city core with the iconic Waterfront as a key amenity to a port city to enhance physical, mental and social well-being in the city by embracing our river and animating our waterfront amenities.
- Improve connectivity between the city centre and surrounding communities by delivering quality active travel corridors and open space prioritising integrated walking, wheeling and cycling, whilst reducing car use, providing effective connections to education, leisure and employment opportunities.
- Connect our economic, education and leisure centres to enhance collaboration and participation and to close an important barrier that exists within our Innovation District.
- Deliver enabling infrastructure to bridge the viability gap on key city centre living sites to serve as a catalyst for Housing Led Regeneration Projects that will deliver c1,000 new city centre homes.
- Improve safety in the area by enhancing amenities, leisure activities and attracting greater footfall, enhancing the area for the FDI delivered within the area to date to ensure longer-term investment in the future.
- Improve the natural environment and assist in achieving net zero goals through replacing car dominated infrastructure with active and sustainable travel routes and through the delivery of enhanced greening and incorporation of SUDs.
As the Integrated Consultant Team (ICT), to progress environmental improvements, there will be two related, but separate tasks, namely:
Task item (a): Environmental improvements on adopted highway, and
Task item (b): Under the Bridges Urban Sports Park & Waterfront
