Tanjong Railway Station, Singapore
An open ideas competition to suggest ways of reinventing the derelict station building in Singapore.
Organised by Singapore's Urban Redevelopment Authority, this open architectural ideas competition will reimagine the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station as a unique heritage and recreational node along the Rail Corridor. How can the building be transformed into a vibrant and multi-functional community building, with inviting public spaces for all to appreciate the unique heritage of the site? The ideas generated by the competition will help to guide the formulation of plans and actions to re-purpose the station to serve the community in its next stage of development. Applicants can submit proposals on possible uses and activities for the TPRS, sensitive design interventions such as low-scale infill developments, as well as ways to enhance accessibility to the site and ensure it is well-integrated with the Rail Corridor.
The Tangong Pagar station used to operate as the southernmost terminus on the West Coast Rail Line of the Keratapi Tanah Melayu railway. While it has ceased operations, the structure has been gazetted as a National Monument and remains the key southern gateway into the Rail Corridor and point of entry to the Central Business District and future Greater Southern Waterfront.
The area for the ideas competition is approximately 6.4ha, and consists of the following built structures and open spaces:
• 3-storey main station building (with GFA of approx. 11,500 sqm)
• Train platforms (with GFA of approx. 6,000 sqm)
• Open-air carpark fronting TPRS building
• Turfed area west of train platforms
• A stretch of the Rail Corridor (approx. 560m) between TPRS and Kampong Bahru Road and which includes 2 former Signal Cabins to be retained and re-purposed.
