St. Rochus Hospital Refurbishment, Telgte
A two-stage negotiated tender for multidisciplinary design services for a 54-bed gerontopsychiatric centre at St. Rochus-Hospital in Telgte, Germany.
The project involves the new-build and refurbishment of a Gerontopsychiatric Centre at St. Rochus-Hospital in Telgte, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Conceived as a specialist facility for elderly patients with mental health conditions, the scheme will deliver 54 inpatient beds and consolidate dispersed services into a single, integrated centre of care. Responding to demographic change and increasing demand for geriatric psychiatric treatment, the project seeks to create a contemporary, patient-centred healthcare environment aligned with the requirements of the North Rhine-Westphalia hospital development plan. The design brief prioritises the integration of psychiatric and somatic care, the enhancement of clinical quality, and the provision of flexible infrastructure capable of supporting future medical and technological developments, including telemedicine.
Set within the existing hospital campus, the proposal combines new construction with the transformation of existing buildings, replacing outdated facilities from the 1990s with a spatially and technically advanced environment. The architectural approach emphasises dementia-sensitive and therapeutic design principles, including clear spatial organisation, natural light, barrier-free circulation, and varied, domestic-scaled environments that support orientation, autonomy, and wellbeing. Communal spaces, gardens, and short internal routes strengthen connections between departments and promote social interaction, while the integration of sustainable materials and energy-efficient systems underlines the project’s environmental ambitions. Through its focus on interdisciplinary collaboration, spatial quality, and patient dignity, the scheme positions architecture as a key contributor to improved healthcare outcomes for an ageing population.
