Primary School Energy Retrofit, Fiè allo Sciliar
This project for an energy-efficient retrofit of a 1990s primary school was launched through a two-stage open design competition in Fiè allo Sciliar, Italy.
The Municipality of Fiè allo Sciliar in South Tyrol has launched an open, two-stage architectural competition for the Primary School Energy Retrofit, inviting proposals for both concept design and a Technical and Economic Feasibility Design. The project involves the energy renovation and extension of the 1990s school, integrating new teaching spaces, a canteen, and outdoor learning areas with the existing structure. Works include upgrading the building envelope, seismic improvement, and installation of a biomass heating system shared with the nearby kindergarten. The scheme requires careful attention to daylight, acoustics, and passive-energy strategies, alongside the use of low-impact materials and a coordinated Building Information Modelling process. The competition seeks a design that combines sustainability, technical efficiency, and architectural sensitivity within Fiè allo Sciliar’s distinctive alpine setting.
