Primary Music School and Concert Hall, Stargard
A heritage-sensitive design competition for a new music school and concert hall in Stargard, Poland, combining building design, public realm, and urban regeneration.
The competition calls for a comprehensive urban and architectural proposal for a new First Degree Music School for approximately 200 pupils and a concert hall accommodating up to 1,200 people, to be located in the historic centre of Stargard, Poland. Conceived as both a building project and a broader urban strategy, the brief is divided into a realisation component (covering the design of the school, concert hall, and associated public realm) and a study component, which explores the regeneration of the surrounding Old Town fabric and informs future local development planning. The scheme must integrate educational and cultural functions with high acoustic performance, clear spatial organisation, and a coherent public interface, while also addressing infrastructure, accessibility, and environmental performance.
Set within the protected Old Town conservation area and an active archaeological site, the project is defined as much by its historical context as by its programme. Competitors are required to reinterpret and reconstruct elements of the historic urban structure, including former street alignments, plot divisions, and the relationship to the Kanał Młyński waterfront, transforming fragmented and underused land into a connected civic landscape. At the same time, the proposal must respond to complex technical conditions, such as challenging ground strata and groundwater levels, while delivering a contemporary architectural identity that balances cultural significance, urban continuity, and long-term feasibility.
