New Primary School and Sports Facilities, Munich
A two-stage tender for architectural services to design a new six-form primary school and sports facilities in Munich’s Messestadt Riem district, Germany.
Set within the evolving urban landscape of Messestadt Riem in Munich, the project proposes the construction of a new six-form entry primary school paired with a triple sports hall and extensive outdoor sports facilities. Positioned between Rappenweg and the railway line on a 21,750 m² site defined by the local development plan with green ordinance 1728n, the scheme is conceived as a contemporary educational campus built predominantly in timber or timber-hybrid construction. The programme includes general and specialist classrooms, communal and learning spaces, a dining and assembly area, and a fully equipped sports park comprising indoor courts, outdoor play fields, and an ancillary equipment building. The architectural commission encompasses building and interior design from work stages 2–5, requiring close coordination with structural, building services and landscape designers, as well as specialist consultants in sustainability, building physics, inclusive sports planning and fire protection.
Anchored in the City of Munich’s long-term environmental objectives (including its climate-neutral administration policy and ecological criteria catalogue) the project demands a highly integrated approach to form, materiality, energy performance and lifecycle sustainability. The school and sports complex must not only meet rigorous educational and safety standards, but also respond sensitively to its neighbourhood context while ensuring efficient construction, stringent cost control and long-term operational resilience. As a civic anchor for a growing district, the new primary school aims to fuse robust architectural clarity with contemporary pedagogical principles, creating an open, healthy and adaptable learning environment that supports both the immediate community and the broader vision for the city’s eastern development corridor.
