Heritage Building Redesign, Ostrava
Restricted architectural competition to regenerate the listed Svinov Granary into a library and multifunctional community venue in Ostrava, Czechia.
Rekonstrukce svinovské sýpky (Reconstruction of the Svinov Granary) is a restricted, anonymous architectural competition launched by the City of Ostrava for the transformation of a listed 18th-century granary and its adjoining 19th-century residential house in the Svinov district. The stone granary, dating from 1750 with a likely Renaissance core, is one of the oldest surviving structures in the area and is protected as a cultural monument. Currently in poor to near-derelict condition, the complex is to be carefully restored and adapted to accommodate a new municipal library and a multifunctional hall, establishing a civic and cultural anchor for the neighbourhood. The brief also calls for the addition of a new building of appropriate scale within the defined design area, while addressing the wider area of interest to strengthen urban relationships and public space integration.
With an anticipated construction budget of CZK 98 million (excluding VAT), the competition seeks a proposal that balances architectural quality, heritage sensitivity, functional clarity and financial realism. The project extends beyond the preservation of historic fabric: it aims to reinterpret the granary’s robust masonry structure and layered history through contemporary intervention, integrating sustainable design principles, an energy concept, and a long-term operational strategy. The winning team will proceed to deliver full design services (from preliminary surveys and concept development through planning approval documentation, construction documentation and author’s supervision) ensuring the building’s transformation into a durable and contextually responsive public institution.
