Castle Landscape Park Restoration, Idar-Oberstein
Restoration of Schloss Oberstein’s historic landscape park in Idar-Oberstein, in Germany, procuring landscape architect services via an open EU procedure single-stage tender.
Perched above the Nahe valley in Rhineland-Palatinate, the historic Landscape Park of Schloss Oberstein unfolds between the castle complex and the dramatic rock formation of the Felsenkirche. Originally conceived in the 1860s as an English landscape garden, the park has gradually lost its spatial clarity through natural succession, structural deterioration and ad hoc alterations. The current project seeks to restore the historic character of the park based on the approved Park Management Plan (Parkpflegewerk), while addressing pressing safety and infrastructure concerns. Eroded pathways, failing dry-stone retaining walls, unstable slopes and insufficient fall protection are to be comprehensively repaired or replaced, alongside the reinstatement of historic sightlines and vegetation structures.
The commission covers Landscape Architecture – Open Space Design in accordance with the German Fee Regulations for Architects and Engineers (HOAI), Work Stages 5–9: detailed design, preparation of tender documentation, support during procurement, site supervision and post-completion services. The works are organised into multiple construction phases and include the renewal of path surfaces, reconstruction of retaining structures and gabion walls, installation of new guardrails, replacement of concrete steps with basalt lava stone steps, slope stabilisation measures and ecological replanting. Operating within a steep, topographically complex and heritage-sensitive setting, the project combines conservation-led landscape restoration with contemporary engineering and environmental resilience strategies.
