Guest Rooms Refurbishment, Mannheim
Refurbishment of guest accommodation and social areas within an operational training centre to modernise facilities and improve comfort and functionality in Mannheim, Germany.
The Berufsgenossenschaft Nahrungsmittel und Gastgewerbe (BGN) is undertaking the comprehensive refurbishment and redesign of the guest accommodation within its training centre at Dynamostraße 7–11 in Mannheim, Germany. The project focuses on upgrading 98 guest rooms located across the second to fifth floors, alongside the transformation of a large beer and wine lounge on the first floor into a contemporary, flexible social space. Housed within an existing multi-wing complex classified as a special building, the scheme forms part of a broader strategy to modernise the facility, aligning it with a 3–4 star hotel standard while improving comfort, acoustics, ergonomics and operational efficiency. The design is expected to harmonise with the organisation’s corporate identity while addressing practical requirements such as durability, ease of maintenance and the use of modular, replaceable components.
Operating within a live training environment, the project demands a carefully phased delivery strategy that maintains ongoing use of the building while accommodating construction works. The brief calls for a holistic upgrade of both private and communal areas, enhancing the overall user experience for trainees and visitors while enabling greater flexibility in how spaces are used for social interaction, group work and leisure. Particular emphasis is placed on the reimagining of the lounge as a multifunctional hub capable of supporting varying group sizes and activities. The appointment covers full architectural services in accordance with HOAI (Fee Structure for Architects and Engineers), with a staged commission and a design-led approach expected to respond to programme, cost, quality and operational constraints.
