Green Mobility Routes, Abrantes
This open international architectural competition seeks a team to design a network of pedestrian and cycling routes, bridges, and landscape connections linking the city of Abrantes to the River Tagus, in Portugal.
The Municipality of Abrantes has launched an international open design competition for the Project for the Network of Routes, Bridges, and Cycleways Connecting the Land to the Tagus River, Abrantes. The competition seeks innovative proposals for an integrated system of pedestrian and cycling routes that will link the historic centre of Abrantes to the banks of the River Tagus, strengthening sustainable mobility, ecological connectivity, and the relationship between the city and its natural landscape. The project comprises two main itineraries and five distinct routes, including new pedestrian and cycling bridges and the requalification of green corridors to promote active transport and environmental regeneration.
The competition area encompasses key urban and landscape sites such as the Abrantes Castle, Aquapolis riverside park, Tagusvalley innovation centre, and São Lourenço Urban Park. The design brief calls for context-sensitive proposals that integrate architecture, landscape, and engineering, while ensuring accessibility, safety, and environmental performance. The outcome will define a cohesive and sustainable mobility network that reconnects Abrantes with its riverfront through thoughtful design and public space enhancement.
