Craft And Artisan Centre, Les Matelles
Adaptive reuse of historic agricultural complex and winery buildings into a craft and artisan centre, with exhibition spaces in Les Matelles, France.
This tender seeks to appoint a design team for the adaptive reuse of a historic agricultural complex at the eastern entrance of Les Matelles, near Montpellier. The modest yet richly layered ensemble contains a dovecote, a sheep barn, later installed winery and a central courtyard. The buildings are currently undergoing structural stabilisation works and will be delivered in a sound, weatherproof condition, meaning the commission focuses on interior functional reorganisation. The new programme to be inserted consists of workshops for wood and ceramics, teaching spaces, exhibition and retail areas, and communal facilities that animate the courtyard as a social heart. Rather than a radical transformation, the proposal calls for a careful inhabitation of what already exists, balancing continuity and change.
