Central Museum Depository, Kolín
Open one-stage services tender to design Regional Museum's new central depository by reconstructing and extending a former granary in Kolín, Czech Republic.
The Central Depository of the Regional Museum in Kolín proposes the sensitive reconstruction and extension of a historic granary within the former ZZN industrial site in Český Brod, Czech Republic. Once a utilitarian agricultural structure, the seven-storey granary will be transformed into a state-of-the-art museum storage and conservation facility, providing a long-term home for more than 250,000 artefacts from the museum’s art, archaeological, historical and ethnographic collections. The design brief calls for an architectural documentation at DSP and DPS stages (planning and construction levels), ensuring the building’s adaptation meets strict conservation, climatic and security requirements. The project integrates modern building services, fire protection systems, and environmental Technologies including rainwater infiltration, new sewer and gas infrastructure, and potential photovoltaic installations, while maintaining the industrial heritage of the site.
The scheme extends beyond pure storage to create a hybrid civic and cultural building. Alongside the climate-controlled depository halls and conservation workshops, the design introduces a public foyer, café, educational and creative spaces, and a rooftop viewing terrace overlooking the small-town fabric of Český Brod. By reconnecting this post-industrial plot to its urban surroundings bounded by Kollárova, Krále Jiřího, and Zborovská Streets, near the railway corridor, the project forms a new cultural anchor for the Středočeský region. Coordinated with municipal infrastructure projects such as the new roundabout at Jana Kouly Street and the redevelopment of underground utilities, the depository embodies a broader vision of sustainable regeneration, merging the technical precision of museum conservation with the architectural expression of reuse and continuity.
