Bus Shelter Improvement, South Yorkshire
South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority transforms public transport, developing a family of architecturally designed bus and tram shelters for the region across the UK. Deadline 09 Oct 2026
South Yorkshire is embarking on a significant transformation of its public transport network, with buses and trams set to operate under public control from 2027. This pivotal moment presents a unique opportunity to fundamentally reshape the passenger experience and establish new benchmarks for design, accessibility, and civic pride. The Mayoral Combined Authority is seeking proposals for exceptional architecturally designed shelters that will form a world-class family of transport infrastructure, becoming synonymous with the region across both bus and tram services. They are pursuing a single Design & Build procurement approach and welcome bids from joint ventures and consortiums, encouraging distinct, human-centred, and durable design solutions. The programme involves a staged award, beginning with concept design, progressing to detailed design, and culminating in the works and build phase. This initiative directly aligns with the 'Make Buses Work for Everyone' vision, introducing a tiered design hierarchy for transport assets, from high-level architectural shelters to standard modular designs and re-imagined simple bus stops. The Authority aims to award a contract by March 2027, with the ambitious goal of having new shelters in place by January 2028, following a strategic prioritisation plan for their roll-out.
