Tourist Information Centre, Tauragnai
An open design competition for the project of the contemporary Tourist Information Centre in the gateway to Aukštaitija National Park, in Tauragnai, Lithuania.
Set on the shores of Lake Tauragnas, Lithuania’s deepest lake, the new Tourist Information Centre “Gateway to Aukštaitija National Park” is envisioned as both a landmark and a threshold. Conceived as the western entrance to the country’s first and largest national park, the project aims to welcome visitors into a landscape of forests, lakes, and cultural memory. More than a functional hub, the centre is tasked with hosting exhibitions, educational programmes, and interactive experiences that narrate the ecological and historical richness of the region. Rooted in the traditions of Aukštaitija’s vernacular architecture, the brief calls for a contemporary building that resonates with local identity while introducing modern infrastructure for sustainable tourism. At its heart, the design must also celebrate the life and work of Lithuanian herbalist and scientist Eugenija Šimkūnaitė, weaving her legacy into sensory spaces dedicated to sight, scent, sound, and taste. The project forms part of Utena District’s Tourism Development Strategy and the wider “Land of Lakes” regional programme, reinforcing the role of architecture as both cultural mediator and catalyst for regional growth.
