Taller Masriera Sociocultural Centre
Competition for the adaptation and rehabilitation of the Taller Masriera Workshop in Barcelona to house a sociocultural facility in the neighbourhood of Eixample.
The Masriera Study-Taller building was built in 1882 and was the work of architect Josep Vilaseca i Casanova with a recreation of a classical temple with columns and pilasters of Corinthian style. The original building was surrounded by a garden. The building is distributed through a central symmetrical wall and a sequence of spaces: porch, hallway and study. The two main interior spaces, vestibule and study, are entirely on the upper floor and illuminated through two large central windows located on the roof. It's original use was as a studio for the German artists Josep and Francesc Masriera Manovens, and was later converted into a theatrical salon. Currently the building is in disrepair and in considerable state of abandonment.
After a long process of talks and negotiations, the Barcelona City Council began the process of acquiring the Taller Masriera building, with the objective of converting it into a new public cultural centre that takes into account the diverse needs of the community - to include a library, small theatre, and neighbourhood space.
