School Campus Redevelopment, Knokke-Heist
A major educational campus redevelopment combining schools and welfare facilities at the Heistlaan street seeks a multidisciplinary design team through a two-stage tender in Knokke-Heist, Belgium.
GO! Campus Heist is envisioned as a transformative educational environment that unifies a wide spectrum of learning institutions, ranging from nursery and primary schools to secondary education, adult learning, and specialised welfare facilities, onto a single, cohesive site along Heistlaan in Knokke-Heist. The project replaces several dispersed school buildings and a welfare facility elsewhere in the town, consolidating them within one large, future-oriented campus designed to support innovative pedagogical models. Learning no longer occurs in isolated classrooms but within flexible “learning units” shared by two to four classes, complemented by a rich variety of differentiated spaces: open collaboration zones, focused study rooms, informal lounges, project studios, instructional areas, and communal facilities including an atrium, dining hall, sports hall, and didactic kitchen. These spaces are conceived to accommodate diverse learning modes, individual, collective, quiet, expressive, static, or movement-based, while offering openness to the wider community through shared uses and adaptable programming.
Set within a residential zone and guided by a municipal volumetric study, the masterplan restructures the site into a series of new buildings and landscaped outdoor environments, following selective demolition of outdated structures. The design team will deliver the full architectural and engineering scope: design development, planning consent, technical documentation, tendering, execution coordination, and post-completion services for the new school buildings and conditional welfare facilities. Outdoor learning areas, covered play spaces, sports courts, cycle infrastructure, and redesigned public realm form an integral part of the assignment. The project’s ambition is to create a resilient, flexible, and human-centred campus that integrates architecture, landscape, sustainability principles, and inclusive educational practice into a unified spatial ecosystem supporting lifelong learning.
