A design tender for the retrofit and revitalisation of a former primary school into a childcare and community facility, via two-stage procedure in Sontra, Germany.
The City of Sontra is transforming the former Regenbogenschule into a contemporary Kindergarten centre comprising 4 classes for toddlers under 3 years old, and 2 for children aged 3-6. Positioned between the historic town centre and the early 20th-century residential settlement, the adaptive reuse project unites restoration, energy retrofit, and landscape renewal. The design have to introduce new play zones, educational gardens, and a multifunctional community hall for up to 200 people, fostering sustainability, inclusivity, and intergenerational engagement. Supported by Germany’s Living Centres urban regeneration programme, the scheme preserves the existing structure while integrating modern environmental systems and barrier-free circulation, reimagining the former school as a civic landmark and verdant learning environment within Sontra’s evolving urban landscape.
