Municipal Offices, Kaunas
The Lithuanian Union of Architects, and City of Kaunas are seeking architectural ideas through competition for a new administrative building and public space at Jonavos Street.
The project is located in the historical part of the city - the heart of Kaunas. Next to the project area are the remains of Kaunas Castle, the paths connect to one of the most popular green spaces in the city - Santaka Park. The area is bordered by the Neris River, and the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris Rivers can be seen nearby. On the eastern side, the territory of the former "Lituanica" footwear factory is bordered by one of the main transport hubs of the Old Town - the roundabout intersection of P.Vileišios bridge, Jonava, and Šauklii streets. A shopping center, public catering establishments, commercial and administrative enterprises are currently operating in the territory of "Lituanica".
An innovative representative administrative building of the municipal institution is planned for the performance of representative and direct functions of self-government. One of the main buildings of the city government, together with the public space, should form a common composite complex, with open first floors for the public - catering, trade, galleries and information centers. The aim is to maximize the size and square footage of the building, as far as the detailed plan allows, and cultural heritage requirements. The first floor is intended to be used for public catering, trade, and services for city guests and residents. The second and third floors of the building should be dedicated to administrative rooms, workplaces and maximum universal halls. One hall - about 300 square meters with the possibility of transforming it into smaller ones. The aim is for the public space to have its own authenticity and uniqueness, this is the territory of small architectural elements, canopies, lamps, fountains, works of contemporary art or other elements. An underground garage will maximize the number of cars in the area specified in the detailed plan. It is necessary to provide parking places for electric cars, cars for people with special needs, as well as storage places for bicycles and other electric vehicles.
