Gorey Market House
Wexford County Council is seeking submissions from competent Architect-led integrated design teams for the detailed design & delivery of the Gorey Market House project.
Gorey Market House is the most important building in the town. The building is of historical and social interest. It is associated with the foundation of the town and was a centre of commerce since its establishment in the early 18th century. It continued to play an important part in the town's history throughout the evolution of Gorey.
The core aim of the GMH Project is to breathe new life into the existing building and bring it back into use for the Community. Along with the renovation and restoration of the existing building, a new building is proposed with a modern link structure between old and new. The new building will provide a second Community Space along with a café/retail space at ground floor level. A new multifunctional public square is created in the existing backland with new access to Main Street and Market Square. It will be turned into a beautiful space which attracts both the local community and visitors from afar to use and offers relief and a retreat away from the bustle of Main Street.
The project broadly includes the following:
- Renovation and Alterations to the existing Market House building (including elements of the existing fabric), a connection through the building at ground floor level to access the lands to the rear with Restoration of the multi-functional Community Room at first floor level.
- New Building with link to Market House to make the first floors (existing and new) Accessible for All along with new accommodation comprising a second multi-functional Community Room, Café/Retail Space and all service accommodation.
- Public realm improvement works to enhance the access and usability of the vacant yard to the rear of the Market House and to provide connectivity to Main Street and Market Square
