Denver Affordable Housing Challenge
International architectural ideas competition organised by Buildner in collaboration with the City and County of Denver and AIA Colorado.
It is the 19th edition in Buildner’s Affordable Housing Challenge series. The competition invites participants to propose innovative architectural and urban strategies that explore the intersection of design excellence and affordability in housing. Designers are encouraged to reflect on how affordable housing can be elevated through excellent design at multiple scales—architectural, urban, and systemic—while responding to Denver’s unique socio-environmental context and housing crisis.

Consultant Team
The competition is open to individuals and teams (up to four members) from any background, and no professional qualifications are necessary.
Submission Criteria
1st Prize – $10k, 2nd Prize – $5k, 3rd Prize – $3k
– Buildner Student Award: $1k
– Buildner Sustainability Award: $1k
– 6 Honourable Mentions: No monetary prize, but certificates awarded
Deliverables for the Competition
Participants must submit the following:
– Four (4) A2 landscape-format presentation boards (max. 10MB per board)
– Project description and cover image (used for publication purposes only)
– Submissions must be anonymous and uploaded through Buildner’s upload panel
Recommended Presentation Content:
– Concept design
– Site analysis (if applicable)
– Plans, sections, and elevations
– City integration visualisations
– Diagrams (e.g., circulation, sustainability)
– High-quality perspectives
– Feasibility and sustainability strategies
– Construction and operation strategies
Optional Media:
– Short written interview
– Introductory video (published for winners)
