Campus Althangrund, Vienna
A major two-stage European open design competition for a mixed-use educational campus in central Vienna, combining schools and university faculties on a complex urban site.
The “Campus Althangrund” competition seeks urban planning and architectural proposals for a new educational campus in Vienna’s 9th district. Located on the site of the former University of Economics and Business and Biological Centre of the University of Vienna, built over a former ÖBB freight yard, the scheme will unite two federal schools (AHS and HTL) and two universities (University of Vienna and BOKU) in an integrated urban campus. The development includes the transformation of 40% of the existing structure, creation of new public spaces, and the formulation of a masterplan and design proposals for the first construction phase. The site is currently physically isolated, and the competition aims to resolve this through urban and ecological repair, integrating the project into the surrounding Gründerzeit urban fabric.
