Bürgerpark Landscape Renewal, Pasewalk
A landscape renewal tender to reactivate Pasewalk’s listed Bürgerpark, in Germany, with sponge-city water management, biodiversity measures and improved public amenity.
The City of Pasewalk is undertaking the climate-adapted revitalisation of its historic Bürgerpark, a 2.8-hectare linear public landscape dating back to the late 19th century and recognised as a listed garden monument. The project aims to restore the park’s original spatial structure while reimagining it as a contemporary ecological infrastructure. A disused concrete pond will be removed and replaced by a natural waterbody; existing mature trees will be conserved and selectively regenerated; and new pathways, seating elements and planting zones will enhance public access and amenity. Central to the brief is the integration of sponge-city strategies: a series of new swales and retention features will hold and infiltrate rainfall arriving from the east, easing flood pressure on downstream channels and improving local microclimate and biodiversity.
Supported by federal climate-adaptation funding, the scheme places equal emphasis on environmental performance, heritage preservation and resilient public space. The landscape architect will deliver the full scope of outdoor space design services, progressing from concept through detailed design and potentially construction supervision. The commission also encompasses ecological monitoring, hydraulic modelling, public workshop facilitation and contributions to a sustainable building assessment for outdoor spaces. By reactivating a long-established recreational landscape while embedding forward-looking water management, the project seeks to transform Bürgerpark into a living piece of green infrastructure, one that strengthens the city’s ecological capacity, supports everyday leisure and reflects Pasewalk’s commitment to climate-responsible urban transformation.
