Bixiga Urban Park and Watercourse Restoration, São Paulo
Two-stage national design competition to transform a contested central São Paulo site, in Brazil, into a renaturalised civic park structured around a reopened urban watercourse.
The Municipality of São Paulo is procuring preliminary architectural, urban and landscape proposals for a new 11,067 m² municipal park in the Bixiga (Bela Vista) district. The site sits beside the Teatro Oficina and within multiple heritage protection zones at municipal, state and federal level. The brief tests how landscape architecture can reconcile hydrological restoration, cultural memory and dense urban context. Competitors must reopen and renaturalise the buried Córrego do Bixiga as the structuring element of the park, increase soil permeability, and accommodate a defined civic programme including park administration, public facilities and multi-use cultural and recreational spaces. The project must operate in two phases due to a temporary metro works area, with the first phase functioning independently.
