New Cemetery, Gillingham
Gillingham Town Council is developing a new cemetery in Gillingham, UK, to provide essential burial facilities for residents. The project integrates the design with the rural landscape, aiming to enhance local biodiversity and create a peaceful, accessible environment for all visitors. Deadline 09 Oct 2026
The existing Gillingham Cemetery, opened in 1890, has reached its capacity for new burial plots. To address this pressing need, Gillingham Town Council acquired agricultural land off The Drove, Common Mead Lane, Gillingham, and submitted a planning application for a new cemetery in July 2026. The design prioritises harmony with the rural setting, ecological impact minimisation, biodiversity support, and creating a peaceful, accessible environment. Key features include retaining and enhancing native hedgerows, new planting for Biodiversity Net Gain, sustainable drainage systems, accessible pedestrian and vehicular access, and sensitively designed parking and facilities. This tender covers Phase 1 of the new cemetery's development. The successful contractor will be responsible for the project from detailed technical design through construction, commissioning, and handover. This includes developing construction information, coordinating landscape, civils, drainage, and surface water management designs, managing site logistics, ensuring health and safety compliance, and completing all necessary documentation for handover. All works are contingent on obtaining full planning approval and finance, and must adhere to approved specifications, British Standards, and health and safety regulations.
