Saalbau Energy Renovation, Witten
Kulturforum Witten AöR is undertaking a major energy renovation of the Saalbau Witten, Germany, to preserve the cultural centre and enhance its environmental performance. Deadline 28 Sep 2026
The Kulturforum Witten AöR is initiating the energy renovation of the Saalbau Witten, a significant cultural and theatre venue in Germany. The primary objective is to modernise the building's energy efficiency, ensuring its long-term viability as a vibrant cultural hub and contributing to climate protection goals. The project is divided into three main lots: architectural services for the building, specialist planning for technical equipment, and specialist planning for structural engineering. This comprehensive approach covers various aspects, including project coordination, building physics (thermal insulation, energy balance, acoustics), surveying, accessibility planning, and potentially facade and roof greening. For technical equipment, services include planning for wastewater, water, gas, heating, electrical, telecommunications, conveying systems, and building automation. The structural engineering lot focuses on the structural design. The project aims for completion by 1 February 2029, with a strong emphasis on reducing primary energy consumption by at least 50% and lowering CO2 emissions, often supported by funding. The renovation will also consider circular planning and construction methods and the challenge of working around ongoing operations, including the Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik and August breaks.
