MPI Geoanthropology Institute Conversion, Jena
The Max Planck Society is converting two former clinic buildings in Jena, Germany, into modern administrative and laboratory facilities for its Geoanthropology Institute. Deadline 15 Oct 2026
The Max Planck Institute for Geoanthropology is undertaking a comprehensive general renovation and conversion of two heritage-listed buildings in Jena, Germany. The project involves transforming the former Urology building, which includes a heritage-listed section from 1914 and a 1991 extension, and the former ENT building from 1928, into state-of-the-art administrative and laboratory spaces. Both four-storey structures, featuring basements and undeveloped gabled roofs, are protected monuments, necessitating close collaboration with the local monument preservation authorities. The new institute will largely comprise office and ancillary spaces, seminar rooms, a dedicated laboratory area with storage, server rooms, and a Decision Theatre. The advanced experimental labs and associated infrastructure will be housed within the Urology building’s modern extension, while the heritage sections will accommodate the offices and communication areas. This project will be delivered using an Open-BIM methodology, including comprehensive BIM coordination services for the full architectural scope from initial concept through to completion.
