\nFoster + Partners is competing for research funding as well as architectural commissions. The practice has joined a consortium awarded \u20ac3.996 million by the European Innovation Council to develop AI-controlled robotic systems capable of assembling timber buildings from the top down.<\/p>\n

Foster + Partners<\/p><\/div>\n

Called SWIFT-BUILD, or Swarm-based Inverted Fabrication for Timber Buildings, the three-year programme will begin in October 2026. Rather than constructing progressively at height, coordinated robots will fabricate floor structures at ground level before lifting them as successive levels are produced. The research is intended to culminate in the autonomous construction of a full-scale, multi-storey timber pavilion, alongside large-span structural modules.<\/p>\n

SWIFT-BUILD proposes an inverted construction process in which buildings rise while fabrication remains at ground level.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Led by the University of Bristol, the consortium brings Foster + Partners together with the universities of Birmingham, Southern Denmark, Delft and Pisa, as well as the Technical University of Munich and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. Foster + Partners is the programme\u2019s only private-sector participant and has been allocated \u20ac385,000 of the EU contribution.<\/p>\n

The system is being developed around modular components and reversible connections. Its timber structures are intended to be adaptable and capable of being dismantled, allowing material to be recovered rather than locked permanently into a building. Robotic units would remain on stable terrain, while real-time feedback enables the emerging structure to respond to loads and adjust its geometry during assembly.<\/p>\n

Foster + Partners<\/p><\/div>\n

The technology remains at the research stage, but Foster + Partners\u2019 involvement points to a wider shift in how large practices build competitive advantage. Design reputation is increasingly reinforced by funded research, specialist fabrication knowledge, proprietary workflows and partnerships with universities and technology developers.<\/p>\n

Research funding can give architectural practices an active role in developing the systems through which future buildings are procured and constructed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

For practices, the significance lies beyond robotics. Publicly funded research can support expertise and intellectual property that conventional commissions may not finance, while positioning architects closer to material innovation and construction delivery. If SWIFT-BUILD proves viable, its value may be measured not only in the pavilion it produces, but in whether architects can convert experimental knowledge into influence over future building systems.<\/p>\n
