Developed through the efforts of victims’ families, the project explores how architecture can preserve personal histories and collective memory.

The Brumadinho Memorial, located in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, opened on 25 January 2025, exactly six years after the collapse of the Córrego do Feijão mining dam, which killed 272 people.

Brumadinho Memorial, via gustavopenna.com.br

Occupying approximately nine hectares near the site of the disaster, the memorial combines architecture, landscape and exhibition spaces dedicated to preserving the victims’ identities and personal histories.

The project emerged from the mobilisation of victims’ families, represented by the association Avabrum, who advocated for a permanent place to honour their loved ones. Their participation in the development and selection of the architectural proposal helped establish a direct relationship between the design and the experiences of those affected.

Rather than creating a conventional monument, the architects developed a sequence of spaces that visitors experience gradually, using materiality, natural light and landscape to encourage reflection.

The journey begins at an entrance pavilion formed by fragmented concrete surfaces that reference the surrounding mining landscape. Inside, a collection of crystals represents the victims, whom their families affectionately refer to as joias, or jewels.

Each year, on 25 January at 12:28 p.m., the moment of the disaster, sunlight is designed to illuminate the crystals, creating a symbolic connection between architecture and remembrance.

Visitors then follow a 230-metre-long passage excavated into the terrain, directed towards the location of the dam’s collapse. The surrounding concrete walls gradually restrict views of the landscape, while the names of the 272 victims appear individually along the route.

A suspended geometric sculpture marks the central part of the journey, accompanied by water and a reflecting pool that contribute to the atmosphere of contemplation.

Through a carefully designed sequence of spaces, the memorial transforms architecture into an experience that connects personal remembrance with collective reflection.

Brumadinho Memorial, via gustavopenna.com.br

The project also includes the Memory Room and Testimony Room, where photographs, personal belongings, documents and family accounts preserve the stories of those who died.

Outside, a grove of 272 yellow ipê trees, one for each victim, introduces a living memorial that will continue to grow and change over time. A dedicated space also provides a dignified resting place for recovered human remains.

Beyond its commemorative purpose, the memorial operates as a cultural and educational institution, supporting exhibitions, research and public activities addressing memory, environmental responsibility and human rights.

Its development highlights the importance of community participation in architectural projects that respond to sensitive social experiences, particularly when the people affected remain closely involved in shaping the institution’s purpose.

For architectural practice, the Brumadinho Memorial demonstrates how design, landscape and community collaboration can create meaningful public spaces that preserve individual histories while supporting collective memory for future generations.

Further Information

Memorial Brumadinho – Official website

Gustavo Penna Arquiteto e Associados – Brumadinho Memorial

CAU/BR – Brumadinho Memorial

["GET
