The Alte Hansestadt Lemgo is undertaking the energy-efficient refurbishment and repurposing of the former Anne Frank School. \nThe northern new building, constructed in 1975\/76, is the focus of this refurbishment. It features a reinforced concrete skeleton structure with masonry infill and clinker cladding, comprising a single-storey entrance hall and two-storey classroom wings that follow the natural terrain. The refurbishment will transform this space into a multifunctional centre for musical and cultural education, encounter, and community welfare. It will integrate the music school and establish a permanent collaboration with the Volkshochschule Detmold-Lemgo (adult education centre), offering flexible rooms for various music lessons, early musical education, and specialised ensembles, alongside spaces for integration, language, movement, and creative courses. The plans also include facilities for public events such as concerts, readings, exhibitions, and workshops, with the existing self-help bicycle workshop continuing its operations within the building. This new cultural anchor point for Lemgo will foster social integration, intergenerational learning, and accessible cultural offerings, while actively supporting the city's 2022 climate protection concept to achieve a climate-neutral building stock by 2035.
\nThe project is financially supported by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, utilising funds from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF\/JTF-Programme NRW), as outlined in the grant notification from the Detmold district government dated 9 July 2026.
