A live crit rather than a ceremony<\/strong><\/p>\n Shortlisted teams present evidence of building performance during the Test of Time Awards\u2019 live final.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n The format matters. Most awards reach the public as a finished list. Here, shortlisted teams must explain their claims to jurors and an industry audience, then answer questions about what happened after the opening photographs were taken. Reflection becomes public, exposing the distance between design intention and lived performance.<\/p>\n A formal post-occupancy evaluation<\/strong><\/a> is not required, which keeps older projects in contention. Teams may instead bring measured or comparative data, independent validation and testimony from clients and users, alongside a candid account of changes and failures. Because the jury will not visit the buildings, the quality and honesty of this evidence\u2014and the public questioning around it\u2014will carry particular weight.<\/p>\n The value extends beyond the day itself. The organisers intend the recorded presentations<\/strong><\/a> to become a publicly accessible learning resource, while winning projects will receive building-in-use studies with commissioned photography. The 2026 <\/strong><\/a>shortlist<\/strong><\/a> stretches from Peter Aldington\u2019s Turn End, completed in 1967, to Carpe Diem Dementia Village, completed in 2020. It includes landmarks such as Lloyd\u2019s, the Eden Project and Gardens by the Bay, alongside homes, schools, healthcare settings and a temporary workspace in Wood Green. Age permits scrutiny; it does not prove success.<\/p>\n Blue House Yard<\/strong><\/a> shows why endurance needs a flexible definition. Jan Kattein Architects designed the meanwhile project for five years on a disused council site. Nine years after opening, it remains in use. Its achievement is not monumentality but the continued value of a deliberately provisional framework: a building can last through the activity and relationships it enables as well as through its materials.<\/p>\n Lloyd\u2019s presents the inverse challenge. Familiarity can make cultural endurance seem self-evident while obscuring performance. The live jury will be able to ask how the building has adapted to four decades of workplace and technological change. Similar questions apply to the maintenance of the Eden Project and the ecological, visitor and servicing demands of Gardens by the Bay. Visibility is not proof of success.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n What five award cycles reveal<\/strong><\/p>\n Shortlists and winners.<\/strong> Beedier\u2019s review covers 160 project records across five award cycles. The completed 2022\u201325 programmes comprise 124 shortlisted entries, including 43 winners. A further 36 projects form the 2026 shortlist and will face the live jury. Winners are included within the shortlist totals, not counted separately.<\/p>\n Marking its 40th anniversary, the Lloyd’s building has been named to the 2026 Test of Time Award shortlist<\/p><\/div>\n Recurring practices.<\/strong> Allford Hall Monaghan Morris appears most frequently, with ten records and three winners: University of Amsterdam<\/a><\/strong>, Burntwood School<\/a><\/strong> y Kentish Town Health Centre<\/a><\/strong>. Its other shortlisted projects are The Barbican<\/a><\/strong>, North London Hospice<\/a><\/strong>, Weston Street<\/a><\/strong>, Westminster Academy<\/a><\/strong>, Hawley Wharf<\/a><\/strong> y White Collar Factory<\/strong>, which appears in both the 2024 and 2026 shortlists.<\/p>\n Four other practices appear four times each. Foster + Partners\u2019 projects are Maggie\u2019s Manchester<\/a><\/strong>, Sulis Hospital Bath<\/a><\/strong>\u2014a 2024 winner\u2014Bloomberg<\/a><\/strong> y SEC Armadillo<\/a><\/strong>. Grimshaw is represented by Bath Schools of Art and Design<\/a><\/strong> in two cycles, Via Verde \u2013 The Green Way<\/a><\/strong> y Eden Project<\/a><\/strong>. WilkinsonEyre\u2019s four records include 2024 Editor\u2019s Award winner Bridge of Aspiration<\/a><\/strong>, alongside Gateshead Millennium Bridge<\/a><\/strong>, Weston Library<\/a><\/strong> y Gardens by the Bay<\/a><\/strong>. Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands appears with 2024 winner Oxo Tower Wharf<\/a><\/strong>, together with Bonhams<\/a><\/strong>, Island Studios<\/a><\/strong> y JW3<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n Building type.<\/strong> The results challenge the idea that an award for longevity is primarily about retrofit. New-build projects form the largest group, although adaptive reuse, refurbishment, restoration and retrofit together represent a substantial part of the archive. Education and workplace are the most frequently represented sectors.<\/p>\n Geography.<\/strong> The archive is strongly UK-focused: 140 of the 160 records are British, with half of those in London. International projects extend its reach, but the findings should be understood principally as a picture of architectural recognition in the UK.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n From intention to consequence<\/strong><\/p>\n The Test of Time Awards leave time between promise and judgement. Buildings are changed by those who operate, maintain, adapt and occupy them. At the live jury tomorrow (9th<\/sup> September 2026), the strongest case will make evidence legible, identify what changed and treat shortcomings as knowledge rather than reputational risk.<\/p>\n Five cycles in, the resulting archive shows what the profession currently recognises as evidence of lasting value. Beedier\u2019s data adds scale to that picture: which practices recur, what kinds of work are represented and where the projects are concentrated.<\/p>\n A completed project cannot rely on its original brief or opening photographs. It must return with evidence of what has happened in use: what worked, what changed and where performance fell short. That move from stated ambition to demonstrated consequence is the award\u2019s most useful demand.<\/p>\n Architecture is not only what a project says it will do.
