The site sits approximately 350 metres south of New Shougang Bridge, beside Shougang Park and the city’s Winter Olympics legacy landscape.

The pavilion will combine visitor information, accessible facilities, indoor and outdoor resting areas, catering and exhibition space. Its brief also calls for landscape integration, ecological resilience, heritage activation and low-carbon construction. Rather than functioning as an isolated architectural object, it is intended as a public amenity and an early showcase for the 30th UIA World Congress of Architects, which Beijing will host in 2029.

At just 200m², the pavilion’s strategic value may be considerably greater than its physical footprint.

The competition is organised by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Planning and Natural Resources and co-organised by the Beijing Institute of Architects, with the Architectural Society of China acting as an advisory institution. Registration is free and the €65,000 prize fund includes €35,000 for first place, €20,000 for second and €10,000 for third.

More significant than the prize money is the route to delivery. The first-prize team will be commissioned to develop and refine its proposal for implementation, distinguishing the programme from speculative ideas competitions without a confirmed next stage.

The proposed site (International Union of Architects / Beijing Municipal Commission of Planning and Natural Resources / Beijing Institute of Architects)

A separate landscape improvement project covering the surrounding 42,000m² area is expected to be launched in line with the construction programme. If that project uses or develops from the winning scheme, its designers may be approached for further cooperation negotiations. This remains a possible follow-on opportunity rather than a confirmed commission.

The competition is open to architects born on or after 16 November 1986 who are entitled to use the title of architect in their country of origin or residence.
