Timespan Redevelopment, Helmsdale
The RIAS and Timespan are seeking an architect to produce a feasibility proposal for the sustainable redevelopment of a museum in the Scottish Highlands.
Timespan is a museum and a cultural institution supporting a diverse array of initiatives spanning arts, heritage, digital innovation, education, wellbeing, and community empowerment. This holistic approach is embodied in the integration of a local history museum, contemporary art gallery, library and archive, youth programs, gardens, shop, and cafe. The vision is to be an institution of the commons: a space where people and communities can come together to cultivate collaborative processes of knowledge exchange, resource sharing and learning. Working through culture, we want to raise questions and inspire people to challenge the matrices of oppression, to build a just world together.
Timespan finds itself at a pivotal juncture, marked by significant transformation efforts. This moment is critical, requiring a comprehensive revitalisation of their entire building to support a strategic plan for 2025-2028. To achieve net zero by 2035, a holistic redevelopment of the entire building—spanning the café, gallery, workshops, storage, and museum spaces will be necessary. This will improve working environments, visitor experiences, and overall coherence, with a focus on local materials and reducing environmental impact. A feasibility study will inform this transformation, ensuring Timespan evolves into a more accessible, sustainable, and inclusive institution.
