Petőfi Sándor Cultural Center, Budapest
Open design competition for the demolition of existing cultural centre and replacement with new library and event space.
The design competition considers the demolition of the Petőfi Sándor Community Centre in Kiskőrös, as well as the library located in it and the old party house as the starting point of the design. In the place of the latter, a new Cultural Centre will be established, and on the territory of the demolished Cultural Centre - next to Sándor Petőfi’s birthplace - applicants propose the establishment of a new library and event space that fits into the civic environment. The new Cultural Centre, born on the site of the old party house, will serve not only the inhabitants of the city, but also visitors more effectively with its architectural, functional and operational significance worthy of the cultural-historical significance of Kiskőrös.
The applicants ensure the assertion of the Petőfi birthplace by harmonizing the architectural, landscape and outdoor architectural tools to a high standard than today. With professional landscape architecture solutions, taking into account the needs of large-scale outdoor events, they present the possibility of expanding Petőfi Sándor Square. They propose an emblematic building with character, continuing the architectural traditions of the city in a modern but fitting way, fully meeting the functional needs.
